STUDENT RESUME WRITING TIPS - MOST IMPORTANT

Survey's of recruiters have revealed that the first two sections thing that they look at in a student resume is the EDUCATION, and EXPERIENCE sections. In the education section ; the type of degree, the major, the graduation date, and the GPA are the main items that are analyzed initially.

In the experience section, recruiters will look at what specific experience the student resume has relating to positions in the company.

When doing your student resume writing, ABOVE ALL ELSE, pay the utmost attention to these two sections and make sure they communicate clearly, and concisely.

STUDENT RESUME WRITING TIPS - STRUCTURE

Think of your resume like a final term paper. You must put in the same amount of energy and focus into laying out it's pieces.

Student Resume Writing - Heading

Your resume should begin with a heading that includes your name, address, telephone number, and, in most cases, e-mail address.

If you’ll be leaving campus soon, be sure to provide a way for employers to reach you after you’ve moved from your dorm room or apartment. If you’re not sure where you’ll be living, it’s best to include both your campus contact information and contact information for your parents or a friend who isn’t planning to move and who won’t mind taking and forwarding messages.

Student Resume Writing - Objective

After you’ve assembled your heading information, you’ll need to find a focus for your student resume writing. One good way of doing that is to write an objective that clearly tells the employer the sort of work you’re hoping to do.

In these one or two sentences it is important to prove your knowledge of a particular area. Avoid general statements, get as specific as you can pertaining to each individual company. That's right, TAILOR IT for each individual opportunity.

Student Resume Writing - Education

At minimum, the education section should include your degree, when it was earned or is expected, and what college or university you attended or are attending. Many job seekers also include their GPA. A 3.0 or better should go on the resume.

Additionaly, in this section, list any accomplishments that you have gotten (i.e. dean's list).

You may include another section after Education for "Coursework". If you do, only list courses that are relevent to the position at the company.

Student Resume Writing - Experience

If you have heavy experience (i.e. internships), consider putting this above the "Education" section. Be as specific as possible, while keeping it fairly concise.

If you wrote software programs, note the function of the programs - was it part of a bigger project? How well did they work?

Employers will be looking at this section very closely. This section is a great place to SELL yourself! Highlight your strengths, and give them reasons why you are so good at what you have done - and what you CAN do!

STUDENT RESUME WRITING TIPS - SUMMARY

Before you do your student resume writing, keep in mind that not every resume needs to look the same. Use this guide as a framework - but really focus on putting your STRENGTHS more towards the top. Really focus on these sections (i.e. Experience/Education) and make them EYE-POPPING and more importantly RELEVENT to the position!
